WHAT'S HAPPENING

White Castle just announced it's deploying 1,000 automated "Crave & Go" kiosks nationwide through a partnership with Automated Retail Technologies. No employees. Fully robotic. Hot sliders in 45 seconds. They've already signed a deal for 5,000 total machines.

WHY IT MATTERS

Each kiosk costs about $20,000 to buy or $500-600/month to lease. Compare that to opening a traditional restaurant. These machines are already live in Boston Logan Airport, Southwest Florida International, hospitals, casinos, and college campuses. White Castle only has ~340 restaurants today. With 5,000 kiosks in the pipeline, the brand's automated footprint could dwarf its brick-and-mortar presence within a few years.

THE BOTTOM LINE

This is what franchise distribution looks like in 5 years. Not just storefronts and drive-thrus, but kiosks, vending, micro-kitchens, and automated retail. The brands thinking about how to reach customers outside of traditional real estate are the ones building the next wave of scale.

What is Discovery Day?

Discovery Day is an in-person (or sometimes virtual) meeting between you and the franchisor's leadership team. It usually happens near the end of your evaluation process, after you've reviewed the FDD, spoken with existing franchisees, and decided you're seriously interested. Think of it as a mutual final interview.

What happens: You'll typically tour the corporate office, meet the CEO and key department heads (operations, training, marketing, support), see the systems up close, and ask the questions that didn't get answered earlier. The franchisor is also evaluating you. They want to know if you're the right fit for their system.

What to watch for: Pay attention to how the team interacts, not just what they say. Do they seem aligned? Are they genuinely interested in your success or just closing the deal? Discovery Day is your last chance to gut-check the people behind the brand before you sign. If something feels off, trust that instinct.
